Lionel Messi, who plays as a forward for PSG, earned a combined $130 million and secured the second spot on the list, while his club teammate and France’s captain Kylian Mbappe, who is the youngest athlete on the list at 24, earned $120 million to take the third position. It is worth noting that PSG is owned by Qatar Sports Investments.

Who else makes the cut?

Los Angeles Lakers star and NBA legend LeBron James, earned $119.5 million, securing the fourth position on the list. Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez rounded out the top five with total earnings of $110 million. In addition, LIV Golf, a new golf tour that has attracted some of the top players from the U.S.-based PGA Tour with large sums of money, emerged last year. Two of its golfers made it to the top 10 on the list.

According to Forbes, on-field earnings figures include all prize money, salaries, and bonuses earned in the last 12 months, while off-field earnings are an estimate of sponsorship deals, appearance fees, licensing income, and returns from businesses they operate.

Forbes Highest Paid Athletes: LIV Golf Athletes become biggest gainers

One of the biggest gainers on the list was a golfer who controversially switched to LIV Golf. He did not even make it into the top 50 in 2022, but he secured the sixth position this year, while his fellow LIV golfer Phil Mickelson ranked seventh with total earnings of $106 million.

The other two basketball players on the list are Stephen Curry, a four-time NBA champion, who earned $100.4 million, and Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns, who earned $89.1 million.

The only retired athlete in the top 10 is former tennis ace Roger Federer, who earned $95.1 million.
