Reportedly, Leicester has entered into in-depth talks with the 52-year-old Dean Smith, who has been without a managerial position since December, when he was fired by Norwich, a team in the lower ranks of the Championship.
Leicester City’s main goal is survival in the Premier League
If Dean Smith agrees to accept the role, his primary responsibility would be to ensure that the 2016 Premier League champions do not get relegated from the top tier of English football.
Reports suggest that he might be working alongside Craig Shakespeare, a former Leicester manager who served as his assistant at Norwich, in an effort to lead the club to safety.
Shakespeare could play a crucial role in maintaining support from the fans as he was a key member of Claudio Ranieri’s coaching team when Leicester won the title in 2016. Later, as manager, he led the club to a quarter-final in the Champions League the following season.
A tough challenge for Dean Smith?
Assuming he accepts the position, Dean Smith would have eight games to rescue Leicester from the threat of relegation, including a match against Manchester City, who are currently in the running for the Premier League title.
The following three games will be crucial as they will be facing off against other teams struggling with the threat of relegation, including Wolves, Leeds, and Everton, all of whom have also undergone managerial changes this season.
