Having fallen out of favour with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City in the first half of the current campaign, Cancelo made a temporary switch to Munich, having assisted in the very first match in the Bavarians’ shirt. However, Cancelo’s fate seems to remain the same as he is finding it tough to get into Bayern’s starting eleven.

The Portugal star showed his frustration at the weekend when he appeared to be the only member of the squad to not celebrate the win over Dortmund. The versatile full-back has 11 appearances so far scoring on one occasion for Bayern, as his future in Germany is unlikely, the Bundesliga giants are reluctant to meet his £70 million clause.

Barcelona has a serious problem at the right-back position, with Ronald Araujo, Sergi Roberto and Jules Kounde all placed in that area during the current campaign, but they aren’t specialist right-backs, basically playing out of position.

Head coach Xavi wants a right-back inclusion in the summer, as Araujo, playing in the right-back role in the 4-0 defeat on Wednesday’s Copa del Rey’s loss to Real Madrid as Vinicius Jr, absolutely tormented the Uruguayan.

According to the report by Sport, Barcelona is determined to sign a new right-back in the summer, Barcelona are extremely interested in signing the Portugal International. However, the Catalan outfit prefers a loan deal, as long as there’s a commitment to making it permanent in the future.

Cancelo is still on a long-term deal at the Etihad Stadium outfit as his contract ends in the summer of 2027. City boss Pep Guardiola’s plan for Cancelo remains uncertain in the summer, as Nathan Ake and Rico Lewis opted above the Portuguese as he was not at his best throughout the first half of the season. Upon his move from Juventus in 2019, the full-back has registered 22 assists and nine goals for Blue Manchester winning the Premier League on two occasions.

A loan deal could certainly benefit Cancelo who would certainly want to nail down his place, moreover, that would also not leave Guardiola with a player whom he no longer wants. However, it is a calculated gamble for Barcelona given question marks on Cancelo’s character and struggle for regular minutes in the current campaign. Yet, he is a top player, capable of playing in both the flanks.
