A 15-year-old female City supporter was injured by a pot weighed down with coins that had been hurled from the visitors’ area during the two teams’ Carabao Cup match in December at the Etihad. Afterwards, a graphic photo of the girl’s bloody blue-and-white scarf surfaced on social media. That was the most recent of several confrontations that occurred during matches between the two clubs amid rising animosity.
Both clubs made a peaceful request prior to the Carabao Cup game, but it eventually turned out that more than 50 reports of rocket launches from the away end were made. A 53-year-old man who was allegedly a City supporter was hospitalised after being attacked outside the stadium while disabled Liverpool supporters were subjected to racial epithets.
The Premier League has been reached out to for comment. While the City declined to comment, it is understood that officials felt they had little choice but to follow advice. The relocation has also come at a cost, with 600 tickets remaining unsold.
