Bengaluru FC could not afford another poor season after finishing in the middle of the table the previous two seasons. Since its inception in 2013, the club has enjoyed consistent success, winning two I-League titles and one Indian Super League (ISL) title, as well as the Federation Cup and Super Cup. However, two poor seasons from 2020 to 2022 threatened to tarnish their legacy. The resurgence began in September, when Bengaluru became the first club in India to win every major championship. The obvious next step was to reclaim the ISL trophy, which the team had last won in 2019.

Bengaluru was eighth in the 11-team league at the start of 2023, with 10 points from 12 games. Bengaluru’s progress appeared difficult before, despite six teams qualifying for the playoffs. That all changed when they went on an eight-game winning streak and advanced to the knockout rounds. They then defeated Kerala Blasters in the playoff, and then advanced to the final of the Indian Super League (ISL) with a victory over Mumbai City FC.

The latest streak represents a far struggle from the situation two months ago. Bengaluru’s ability to find the comprehensive set to effectively utilize the maximum capability of the squad has been the most important factor in the revival. Grayson incorporated all of his perceptions and knowledge gained in finding a solution, which eventually led to the 3-5-2 formation. Grayson has benefited from the switch to 3-5-2.

The club had a strong squad with top players Roy Krishna, Sandesh Jhingan, and Javi Hernandez joining Sunil Chhetri and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, but strength on paper doesn’t always equate to strength on the field. Grayson took his time figuring out his ideal lineup and squad composition despite winning a trophy early on

As a result, Javi Hernandez now has the required space to advance and look for scoring possibilities, while Rohit Kumar stays back to finish the grunt work in the middle. Hernandez has been Bengaluru’s most dangerous offensive player, scoring six goals and dishing out five assists. He was unable to do that in other formations where he was also instructed to keep the dissent quiet.

With three center-backs and the midfield duo of Rohit and Suresh Singh Wangjam, Bengaluru has been able to close down areas, forcing the opposition to seek wide routes and facilitating team defence. The ISL Final will now take place on Saturday, Match 18, with Bengaluru FC taking on either ATK Mohun Bagan or Hyderabad FC.
