However, 48 hours ahead of the tournament, the Qatari government did a major upturn. It demanded a ban on alcohol across the Football Stadiums and in the city. All eight World Cup locations would provide beer and other alcoholic beverages, as had been originally guaranteed. The FIFA executive committee announced that no venues will offer alcohol after caving to pressure from the Qatari government. Budweiser, the official beer sponsor, received terrible news and is now seeking compensation as a result of the unexpected U-turn.

For this World Cup, Budweiser has a contract with Fifa worth around £65 million. Additionally, they have a World Cup agreement for up to £95 million for 2026. The following competition will have more countries competing in it and will be hosted around the USA, Canada, and Mexico. That means that instead of the present 64-match schedule, it will include 104 games .

With additional stadiums and fan zones in operation, Budweiser will, of course, have more opportunities to market their beer. However to compensate for the losses due to  restriction in Qatar, they are expected to demand that FIFA reduce a hefty £40 million from the cost of being the official beer supplier.

However, throughout the upcoming weeks, fans will only have access to official World Cup locations in the Doha city centre Fan Festival. But since the beer is served in 500ml glasses, a Bud will cost them £12, which is less than a pint. Only non-alcoholic Bud Zero will be available for purchase at stadiums, and each cup will cost about £7.
