After learning they would have to pay host broadcaster BeIN Sports about 100,000 Qatari riyals ($27000) for each restaurant or bar that shows games, a handful of hotels in Doha have decided not to screen them.

The price of providing games in rooms is yet unknown, but hoteliers consider those costs as being unprofitable as well because there is no set fee for each establishment. The owners of rented villas and flats are reportedly also being impacted by the costs.

BeIN Sports stated that it was unable to disclose any business agreements with lodging companies. However, it made clear that it needed to make back part of the enormous sums paid for the rights to broadcast the tournament as well as its investment in production and technological infrastructure.
According to the broadcaster, Doha hotels and other businesses would benefit financially and in terms of foot traffic from the games. It made note of the fact that host broadcasters had levied fees during prior World Cups and competitions.
