Messi denies assertions that Argentina are the favourites to win the World Cup claimed by people like Spain manager Luis Enrique. Despite Argentina’s amazing 35-game winless streak, which dates back to 2019, Messi feels Argentina has a long way to go.

In an interview with CONMEBOJ, Messi said: “The candidates are always the same. There are a few surprises but in general, the big teams are the candidates. Above the rest? Brazil, France, England. Today, they are a little above the rest but anything can happen.”

Messi is expected to be essential to Argentina’s success on and off the field in Qatar. He contributed five assists and four goals in seven games as Argentina won the Copa America the previous year. According to Angel Di Maria, he also motivated his teammates with a stirring speech prior to the championship match versus Brazil. With nine goals in his past three games, Messi is also regaining form for his nation just in time.
