“This is a shame, a joke! I feel ashamed! Not because of Dani Alves’ story. What is Martinelli’s story? 33 career goals. This is a shame, a lack of respect for football.” said Neto.

Tite, announced his team for the upcoming tournament in Qatar earlier this week, with the five-time champions hoping to add to their record-breaking total. Having not won the prestigious Cup since 2002, the group appears to be much younger.

Jesus, 25, has been chosen after a strong start to his career at Arsenal, while Martinelli, 21, has also done enough to earn a spot. Despite the pair’s performances this season, Neto is not convinced and has gone on a tirade about Tite’s choice to choose Martinelli over Flamengo attacker Gabriel Barbosa.

“Calling up Martinelli and not calling up Gabriel [Barbosa] is a lack of respect. The biggest shame of all the call-ups. Calling up Martinelli shows that you, Tite, shouldn’t hold the position you do, because you’re not fair to Gabriel [Barbosa].

“The guy [Martinelli] who scores five goals in the season, who walks around the mall here, nobody knows who he is… And not taking Gabriel [Barbosa], the guy who scored the goal of the Libertadores title, who scored 29 goals in the season.”

While Martinelli was being targeted by Brazilian international Neto, he also to a dig the youngster’s Arsenal teammate Jesus, who had been unimpressive for the national team.

“How many goals has Gabriel Jesus scored in these last games? Oh, none. In the World Cup? Zero. In the qualifiers? Zero. He hasn’t scored in eight games.”

Brazil kicks up its World Cup campaign against Serbia on the 25th of November, followed by group-stage matches against Switzerland and Cameroon.
