On Sunday, Spain defeated Colombia 1-0 to win the 2022 U-17 Women’s World Cup at the D. Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Ana Guzman’s late own goal was the difference between the two teams, as Spain became the first country to successfully defend the championship. Spain’s Vicky Lopez was awarded the Golden Ball of the tournament. While Germany’s Loren Bender received the Golden Boot.

Colombia, which had scored six of its seven goals in the competition in the first half, was aggressive from the start. Gabriela Rodriguez nearly scored from a free kick in the sixth minute, but was stopped by a full-stretched Sofia Fuente of Spain, who reached out her right palm to keep the ball out of goal.

Spain responded 16 minutes later when Cristina Libran fired from distance after collecting a pass from Vicky Lopez, only to be denied by a similar stop, this time on the other end by Luisa Agudelo. After a scoreless first half, Kenio Gonzalo’s team nearly broke the deadlock in the 48th minute when Cristina Libran fired into the net after an initial stop by Agudelo. However, following a VAR check and a glance at the monitor by referee Katia Garcia, the goal was ruled out since the footage indicated that the ball had come off Libran’s  hand before her shot.

But Spain kept probing the Colombian defence and eventually broke the tie in the 82nd minute. Paula Partido and Laia Martret combined after the hour mark, with the former moving the ball down the right wing. Martret attempted to meet the cross in the centre with her right foot, only to have it drift into the net after a touch off Guzman.
