Gotze hasn’t played for Germany since 2017, but he’s earned a new chance owing to his strong form since joining Eintracht Frankfurt last year. Gotze’s most memorable moment occurred in the 2014 World Cup when he scored a game-winning goal against Lionel Messi and Argentina to claim the cup for Germany.

He had to withdraw due to a struggle with muscular myopathy, a kind of chronic muscle inflammation. However, five years after his last appearance for Germany, he has been included in their roster for the World Cup in Qatar.

“Mario Goetze is there. 2017 was the last time. Mario is totally happy and so are we to have him. It gives us many options,” Hansi Flick told a news conference.

Werder Bremen forward Niclas Fuellkrug also earned a spot after a stellar season with 10 goals so far and following the absence of the injured Timo Werner. Away from Gotze, one of the more controversial choices in defense has been made, with Mats Hummels, a staple for Germany over the years, being passed over in preference for Southampton’s Armel Bella Kotchap.

Justifying his choice, Flick said: ‘Mats is fully fit and in excellent form. But within the coaching team, we decided for a younger player (Bella-Kotchap). The focus was more on the future.’
