In a dramatic season finale, Bayern was celebrating what turned out to be an unexpected title win, while Dortmund’s hopes of winning their first league trophy since 2012 were dashed when they fell behind Mainz 2-0 early on before battling back to draw 2-2, despite the fact that they needed to win to win the title.

Bayern ended with 71 points, beating Dortmund on goal differential. Third and fourth place finishers RB Leipzig and sensational Union Berlin will both play in the Champions League the following year.

Kingsley Coman calmed the Bavarians’ fears early on by giving them the lead with a beautifully curled strike into the top corner. The Bavarians needed to win. The Bavarians dominated the first half without taking too many risks because Dortmund had fallen behind after the first half.
