FC Goa vs Punjab FC Preview
FC Goa’s first match against Hyderabad FC was cancelled as several players of both clubs were called up to the Indian football team for the ongoing Asian Games. As a result, FC Goa is the only team yet to make an appearance in ISL 10.
The Gaurs came agonizingly to give themselves a chance to qualify from the group stage but felt just short. FC Goa finished 7th in ISL 9, with 27 points 20 matches. Finishing a place above the 7th would have ensured a qualification but the Gaurs felt 3 points short.
Punjab FC became the first team in the history of Indian Super League to gain promotion from I-League. The team from northern India won last season’s I-League and qualified for the premier tournament of India.
Punjab FC suffered a rude awakening in their ISL opener against last year’s champion Mohun Bagan Super Giant at the Salt Lake Stadium. The Mariners feasted on the new entrants on their home ground as MBSG’s attackers ran riot through the Punjab defence. Jason Cummins, Dimitri Petratos and Manvir Singh scored against Punjab to hand the new entrants a loss. Luka Majcen scored one for the away side but the performance left a lot to be desired.
