FACT Check – Yes, Mahatma Gandhi plays club football in Brazil

While it might come as a shock to many, but there is actually a footballer in Brazil, who goes by the name of Mahatma Gandhi Pires.

It is not unusual for sportspersons to take up names from their idols, and there are a few examples in India too. Upcoming Indian cyclists David Beckham and Ronaldo were in the news during the Asian Games, for their famous names. But recently, a Brazilian footballer’s name has come up with a rather surprising one.

The footballer’s name is Mahatma Gandhi. Yes, there is actually a player in Brazil who plays as a defender for a club there, Ipora. The 31-year-old’s full name is Mahatma Gandhi Heberpio Mattos Pires and started his career with Atletico Clube Goianiense way back in 2011. This only goes to show, that India’s father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi is revered all over the world, and not just in our country.

To make things even more interesting, there is a player in Brazil by the name of Mosquito.
