In the football-rich regions of Europe, a young Indian sensation, Som Kumar, at just 18 years old, has captured hearts and minds with his extraordinary talent. He achieved the remarkable feat of winning the best Goalkeeper award in the SAFF U20 Championship in 2022, becoming the youngest-ever recipient.
Now called up to the first team of NK Olympija Ljubljana (NKOL), he embodies the unwavering spirit of determination, proving that age is no barrier to excellence in sports. Som’s story inspires countless dreamers to chase their aspirations with unrelenting passion, as he continues to leave the world in awe with each breathtaking save.
At the tender age of 13, Som embarked on a remarkable journey during an U15 summer tournament in Italy. Initially serving as the second-choice goalkeeper behind a more experienced local player, he seized a fleeting opportunity and soon secured his place in the team.
Som said relieving the memories,
“In Italy, I was one of the younger players in the squad and I started out as the third goalkeeper. I eventually got to play a game, which was against Italian Serie A side Bologna. We drew the game 1-1. I saved three penalties and we eventually won the Series. It was a great experience for me from starting out as the number three goalkeeper and finally becoming the first choice. “

This trend continued when he was called up as one of the youngest players for the Indian U17 National team trials. Starting as the fourth goalkeeper, Som’s exceptional talent propelled him to the number one spot just before the AFC U17 qualifiers.
“I got exposed to seeing how European football is, which is much more developed compared to Indian football. So it was a great experience for me at such a young age to see how European games work. “
“Indian Camp, it was very challenging because again, playing with guys older than me. So physically, they were alot more developed than much more stronger than me. But when I went into the camp, I didn’t have any intention of playing any of the matches but I was just trying to gain experience and getting good quality training.“
His outstanding performances for the U17 team caught the attention of selectors, leading to a call-up to the U20 National team in 2022, despite being the youngest player on the roster. In the South Asian Championship, after a challenging start for the team, Som was given a chance in the second match.
“When I got the chance in the second game against of the saw, I was well, prepared and I and we won the game and then we eventually won the tournament.”

“There’s a lot more competition in Europe and I get to play matches over there, so I don’t think it’s right for me to join a ISL Club at the moment. So, all my goals and ambitions are focused on Europe. “
Sadanandan, a guiding force in Som’s journey, played a vital role in nurturing his talent, arranging training exposures in India and Europe. The L&M Group, Som’s managers in Slovenia, supported his club transitions and training.
“Satya sir, came into my career when I was very young and the impact that he’s had on my career is immense. I can’t thank him enough and the exposure that he’s given me. “
“He also introduced me to the L&M management which I’m working with in Slovenia. From giving me exposure in India to training with the top coaches to going to Europe. And now, eventually playing for one of the biggest clubs in Slovenia and Eastern Europe. “
Speaking on the same, Satyajit Sadanandan had a remarkable observation, on young Som playing with boys over his age.
“He has been phenomenal ever since I saw him. I like how committed he has been; that’s one of the things which stands out. But I would say what really stood out to me when I saw him very early on was his composure and his maturity. He’s way beyond his years in terms of temperament. This has been the case throughout. When he was 13, he was competing with boys over 15 and 16”
“I remember we went for this national team trial even though he was not eligible; he was too young. We somehow managed to get special permission, and he was facing boys who were much bigger and using equipment that was more powerful than what he had ever faced, but he held his ground and made his mark. “
