UEFA EURO, has seen several teams make their debut in each edition since its inception. From the tournament’s humble beginnings in 1960, nations have battled for their chance to compete on Europe’s biggest stage. Each tournament introduces new hopefuls eager to make their mark and challenge the established powerhouses and EURO 2024 is no different.
23 of the 24 qualified teams have previously appeared at a UEFA EURO tournament, with Georgia making their first appearance. That being said let us take a look at the debutants in each of the 17 editions of the tournament.
UEFA Euro debutants over the years
In 1960, Czechoslovakia, France, the Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia kicked off the tournament. Subsequent editions welcomed powerhouses like Spain in 1964, England and Italy in 1968, and Germany in 1972. The Netherlands joined in 1976, while Portugal made their debut in 1984.

The 1990s saw teams like Croatia, Turkey, and Switzerland emerging. Recent tournaments introduced Iceland, Wales, and Northern Ireland in 2016, and Finland and North Macedonia in 2020. The latest addition is Georgia in 2024, reflecting the ever-evolving landscape of European football.
