There seemed to be no stopping the Norwegian forward at the Etihad. He was quick, dribbling around, beating defenders, and seemed to have an extra second in reaction time. He notched up his hat-trick just at the brink of halftime and had already scored his fifth goal by the 57th minute. Haaland also became just the third player in Champions League history to score five goals in a match.

Players who have scored five times in a single game in UEFA Champions League –

  • Lionel Messi vs Bayer Leverkusen in a 7-1 win in 2012
  • Luiz Adriano vs BATE Borisov in a 7-0 win in 2014
  • Erling Haaland vs RB Leipzig in a 7-0 win in 2023

Looking at the way City were playing, it seemed as though they would easily score a couple more and Haaland would definitely have his double hat-trick. Sadly for him though, Guardiola decided that he had his share of fun and took him off around the 60th minute.

Speaking about the same in the post-game interview, Haaland spoke about how he wanted his double hat-trick. Haaland said, ‘Yeah. I told him (Guardiola) when I went off that I would love to score my double hat-trick. But, well what can you do?’

Records broken by Erling Haaland vs RB Leipzig –

  • Manchester City’s all-time top scorer in a single season (30 goals)
  • Just the 3rd player to score 5 goals in a single UCL game
  • Quickest player to reach 30 UCL goals
  • Youngest player to score 30 UCL goals in the history of the competition

With this mighty display, Manchester City has booked their spot in the Quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. Erling Haaland, with his 5 goals, has also gone past Mohammed Salah as the top scorer in this year’s competition. Haaland sits on top with 10 goals, whereas Salah is second with 8 goals.
