Toni Kroos and Luka Modric are both chosen by Ancelotti, with Benzema and Vinicius manning the Real Madrid front line. In the end, Christensen is benched and Marcos Alonso is brought in to take his place. The attacking threats for a thin Barcelona front line are Ferran Torres and Raphinha. Ferran, Gavi, and the Brazilian will make up the front three of Xavi’s 4-3-3 formation.

With Barca appearing completely out of the game and off the pace, Real Madrid exploded out of the gate and appeared set to lead by two or three goals at the half. Nonetheless, the visitors seized the lead despite Benzema having the ball in the net but it being disallowed. To give the Blaugrana a lead completely against the flow of the game, Nacho and Militao bundled in Kessie’s strike on the line. And if the home crowd didn’t appreciate it, they were stunned when the referee chose not to book Gavi twice. When Raphinha was ultimately added to the book, there were a lot of ironic shouts.

Given the periods of the game where they battled to keep possession of the ball, Barcelona would feel themselves fortunate to be up by one goal at the break. The ball ricocheted off Eder Militao and into the goal for Barcelona’s own goal in the 27th minute. The trio of superstar Pedri, Ousmane Dembele, and talisman Robert Lewandowski are all absent for Barcelona.

After a fractious midfield tussle in which Vinicius Junior put Frenkie de Jong in a headlock during a violent struggle for the ball between the two, the first half finished with Barca leading 1-0 and Vinicius Junior receiving a yellow card. When Kessie received a pass from Torres again in the 72nd minute, he attempted a close-range shot, but Ansu Fati, who entered the game in the second half, egregiously blocked it off the goal.
