East Bengal FC vs Hyderabad FC Preview
East Bengal has improved leaps and bounds since last season. New coach Carles Cuadrat has won the trust of the East Bengal faithful shortly after arriving. The Red & Gold brigade beat Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the first Derby of the season in Durand Cup group stage. The win felt more special because it was EBFC’s first triumph over their rivals in four years. The underdogs went on a dream run to the final of the tournament, only to lose to MBSG.

However, the team’s joyous spirit was somewhat dampened in ISL’s first match against Jamshedpur FC. The Red & Gold brigade failed to convert their chances in the match. The game ended 0-0, with Cuadrat’s men left frustrated by the Jamshedpur FC defence. Cuadrat would want the likes of Cleiton Silva and Siverio to put on their scoring boots in the match against HFC. Notably, EBFC has never qualified for the latter stages of ISL since they joined the tournament.
Hyderabad FC was supposed to kick-off their ISL campaign against FC Goa on 22nd September. However, the match was called off due to the late inclusion of crucial players from both sides in the national team for the Asian Games. As a result, HFC will now have to play two back-to-back games on the road, against East Bengal on September 30 and Jamshedpur FC on October 5.
With the additions of some smart foreigners such as Joe Knowles, Petteri Pennanen and Jonathan Moya, the 2021-22 champions will look to repeat their feat. HFC has only retained Joao Victor out of all the foreigners from last season. The experienced midfielder will lead the team this season. However, preseason preparation could be an issue for Hyderabad FC, who has only played four practice matches in the lead up to ISL 2023-24. The fitness of the players may pose a headache for HFC management.
