The Durand Cup, Asia’s longest-running football tournament, is set to kick off on July 27th, marking the beginning of India’s domestic football season. The final is scheduled for August 31st.
The 133rd edition of the tournament will be played across four locations: Kolkata, Jamshedpur (new), Shillong (new), and Kokrajhar. A total of 24 teams from the Indian Super League (ISL), I-League, and other invited leagues will battle it out in 43 matches.
Format and key dates
The tournament will follow a league-cum-knockout format. Teams will be divided into six groups, with the winners and two best runners-up progressing to the knockout stage. The opening match, semi-finals, and final will all be held at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.
International flavor and defending champions
Just like last year, international teams are expected to join the competition, adding an extra layer of excitement. This year, Mohun Bagan Super Giant will be looking to defend their title, while East Bengal will be hoping to go one step further after finishing as runners-up in 2023.
The legacy continues
The Durand Cup holds a special place in Indian football history, being the oldest tournament in Asia. This year, the competition promises exciting matches across multiple venues, making it a must-watch event for football fans.
