David De Gea Contract: Erik ten Hag’s desire to simmer the wage load
Since taking charge at United, Ten Hag has implemented a culture shift to reduce the club’s bloated wage bill. This was partially achieved by offloading Cristiano Ronaldo in November, but it left De Gea as the team’s highest-paid player, earning £375,000 per week.
However, Ten Hag reportedly wants to alter this arrangement, as he believes De Gea’s salary is excessive and unsustainable. According to The Sun, United is reluctant to offer the goalkeeper more than £250,000 per week on his new contract, and his base salary will be even lower, representing a 33% cut.
The report suggests that De Gea’s total earnings will depend on his number of appearances, as he will receive bonuses to make up the difference.

However, United’s management reportedly wants to extend De Gea’s contract by two years without overpaying him to be a backup option. This concern has fueled rumors that Ten Hag could be looking for a new goalkeeper this summer.
Although De Gea has been in excellent form this season, the United manager reportedly prefers a goalkeeper who is confident in claiming crosses and able to demand their defense and is therefore considering other options. FC Porto’s Diogo Costa is a strong candidate, and the Mirror suggests that United could compete with Liverpool for New England Revolution’s Djordje Petrovic.
Having joined in 2011, De Gea has made an impressive 525 appearances for Manchester United, becoming the club’s all-time leading clean sheet holder with his 181st shut-out during last Sunday’s Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle United.
This season, he has kept 10 clean sheets in 24 Premier League matches, maintaining the excellent form that earned him the United Players’ Player of the Year award for 2021/22.
De Gea has won five major trophies during his time at Old Trafford, including the recent Carabao Cup triumph, and is eager to win more under the leadership of Erik ten Hag.
