Dream move to Madrid? David de Gea prime target for Los Blancos after Courtois injury

De Gea, who almost signed for Real Madrid in 2015, became a free agent this summer after being released by Manchester United.

La Liga giants Real Madrid could go all in for a known face to replace the injured Thibaut Courtois, but only if their fax machine works this time. Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is being considered by the Spanish club to replace Belgium international Courtois who broke his ACL recently, according to multiple sources in Spain.

De Gea, who almost signed for Real Madrid in 2015 but for a faulty fax machine, became a free agent this summer after being released by Manchester United. The Red Devils decided against extending De Gea’s contract, in spite of the Spaniard winning the golden gloves in last season’s Premier League.

With Thibaut Courtois being guaranteed a starting place as soon as he recovers from the ACL injury and the team’s lack of trust in second goalkeeper Ukrainian Andryi Lunin to get the job done, the Los Blancos is looking for custodians who would accept a shorter deal.

When all these conditions are taken into consideration, De Gea seems like a perfectly viable short-term option.

The Spaniard was heavily linked with a number of clubs all over the world after becoming a free agent.

Multiple reports claimed that De Gea was poised for a move to the cash-rich Saudi Pro League. He was also linked with an MLS club and a return to Spain with Sevilla or Valencia wasn’t ruled out.

However, none of those moves materialised and De Gea remains a free agent as the summer transfer window moves towards its final month.

Interestingly, De Gea belonged to the industrial part of Madrid, having joined the Atletico Madrid academy at the age of 13 and rising through the ranks to play for its senior team before making the switch to England.

What are other options for Real Madrid?

David De Gea is not the only goalkeeper Real Madrid is keeping an eye on. The Madrid board has enquired about the situation of Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Chelsea custodian is also Bayern Munich’s top target in between the sticks with a loan-to-buy agreement being pursued by the Bavarians.
