Croatia Morocco HIGHLIGHTS: Mislav Orsic POWERS Luka Modric’s LAST DANCE, Croatia claim narrow 2-1 victory over Morocco in FIFA WC Third Place Playoffs : WATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Croatia and Morocco made a number of changes to their starting lineups for World Cup third-place playoff at Khalifa International Stadium, with both coaches given opportunities to players who had been benched throughout the tournament. Morocco will be missing skipper Romain Saiss, who was removed after only 21 minutes in the semi-final loss to France. Achraf Hakimi and Jawad El Yamiq remain in defence, with Achraf Dari and Yahya Attiat-Allah replacing the injured Saiss and Nayef Aguerd. Croatia captain Luka Modric starts in midfield alongside Mateo Kovacic, but Marcelo Brozovic sits out and is replaced by Lovro Majer. Marko Livaja and Mislav Orsic go on the offensive.

Croatia took an early lead thanks to a fantastic set piece routine. Perisic went ahead of his opponent to cushion the free kick towards the middle after Majer sent it into the near post. Gvardiol surged ahead and headed the ball beyond Morocco goalkeeper Bounou.Morocco equalised less than two minutes after giving up the first goal. They also did it from a free kick. Dari was the quickest to react when Ziyech’s inswinging free-kick was unintentionally deflected towards his own goal by Modric’s head, and he headed it beyond Croatia goalie Livakovic from five yards.

Minutes later Mislav Orsic put Croatia in lead. Mislav Orsic curled it from the top left corner of the Morocco box and hit the inside of the post. The ball was deflected into the net by the post. Bounou, the goalkeeper, has no chance. Majer’s hefty touch denied him a shot, but Livaja smacked it out to the left for Orsic. Orsic took the first shot, looping it barely over Bounou’s outstretched hand and inside the far post. Croatia went to halftime in lead.

The second half was not as fast or feisty as the first, as fatigue from a long tournament appeared to have caught up with both teams, who were playing their seventh game in Qatar. Croatia also felt wronged when Gvardiol appeared to be tripped in the box by Sofyan Amrabat, who was now playing in defence due to injuries to their centre backs, but the referee refused to award a penalty. Youssef En-Nesyri came near in stoppage time, but despite Morocco’s best efforts to equalise, Croatia hung on for triumph and bronze, emulating the accomplishment of their heroes from 1998, who finished third as well.
