Croatia Football Team: FIFA World Cup: Football has become a business in current times and sometimes it feels like it’s all about the money. But, when you listen to the stories of the adversities that some footballers faced, you truly understand their journey. Take Croatia’s case for example. They have a midfielder who is a school dropout. A winger who worked on chicken farms. A goalkeeper who aspires to be a diplomat. And a defender who couldn’t speak Croatian, and now, they all conspire to stop Lionel Messi from achieving his lifelong dream to win the World Cup for Argentina. Ivan Perisic
The winger from Spurs has had to climb quite a ladder to make it to where he is today. He used to work on chicken farms and also used to compete in the Beach Volleyball World Cup. His family supported the Croatian club, Hadjuk, and young Ivan had one dream – to play for Hadjuk. Sadly, that never happened, even though he was a bright prospect in their academy. In 2006, Sochaux, a French club offered 360,000 euros to Hadjuk for their brightest prospect.

His father believed that the money received from this transfer would help them out financially and they moved to France. Having joined Club Brugge in 2011, he pleaded with the then Croatia coach, Slaven Bilic, saying, ‘If need be, I’ll collect stray balls during training sessions.’ From doing that to helping Croatia almost reach their second World Cup final, Ivan has come a long way.
Dejan Lovren
When Lovren was 3, his family had to flee Zenica, the Bosnian city due to war in former Yugoslavia. They moved to Munich and stayed there for seven years, where Dejan had a good time. Things went downhill when his family wasn’t granted permanent residency in Germany and had to go back to Croatia.

I was speaking but they didn’t understand anything I said. But after a couple of years, it got better. I took the character from Germany and from my family because they were showing me that life is tough.’
Safe to say, Lovren has gone on to do big things and has been a pillar of this current Croatian generation.

Marcelo Brozovic
At just the age of 16, Brozovic took a major decision in his life. His father too was at the forefront of it. Most fathers would want their children to complete their education, before pursuing what they wanted to do. But Brozovic’s father, a butcher, ASKED his son to drop out of school. The reason being that the school didn’t let him focus on football. Now, looking back at that decision and his career, playing in his second World Cup semi-final, within earshot of a final, Brozovic would be mighty pleased with the decision his father took.
