Could Timo Werner be coming back to Premier League donning Red Devils colours?

Manchester United feel Timo Werner can help Rasmus Hojlund with experience to share the goalscoring burden

Manchester United are managing to scrape by week-in week-out in the Premier League. One of the major reasons has been their lack of scoring ability, especially from their players who operate in the final third. Newcomer Rasmus Hojlund also has had a slow start to life. He hasn’t scored a single goal yet for Man United. Reportedly, to relieve pressure on the Danish forward, the Red Devils coach Erik Ten Hag has been enquiring about RB Leipzig and former Chelsea centre-forward Timo Werner.

Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has recently reported that Manchester United coach Erik Ten Hag has enquired about the availability of Timo Werner. Apparently, the RB Leipzig player is not happy with life at the German club.

He has also been linked with a loan move to several interested clubs this winter. Real Madrid were one of the teams that had been monitoring his situation. However, apparently, Werner still wants to see through the rest of the season and then move permanently to a club in the next summer transfer window.

Reportedly, Los Blancos have slowed down in their tracks to pursue the German. Man United is keeping an eye on the player in the midst of it. They haven’t made any formal bid and no negotiations have started yet.

However, they are looking for an experienced forward to share the goalscoring burden with Rasmus Hojlund. It seems that Ten Hag thinks Werner could be the man for the job. The Red Devils are already in deep waters at this stage of the season with 4 points behind the top 4 in the Premier League.

They’re sitting in 6th place with 24 points from 8 wins and 5 defeats so far in the competition. However, their point isn’t their main problem, it’s the number of goals they have scored. With only 16 goals scored in 13 games, they have the worst number in the top 12 teams in the league.

Even 16th-place Nottingham Forest have scored the same amount of goals as them so far this term. What’s more concerning is that only 4 of those 16 goals were scored by recognised forwards of the team.

3 of those goals came in their last Premier League match against Everton last weekend. Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Anthony Martial scored one goal each in that match to win by a 3-0 margin. New signing Rasmus Hojlund has not been able to score his first goal in the Premier League yet.

He came to the club with a back problem which saw a late debut. He has scored 5 goals for them in Europe. However, the club believes an experienced forward beside him can help him share the goalscoring burden.

Timo Werner joined Chelsea in 2020 from RB Leipzig on a £53 million deal. He scored 23 goals in 89 appearances for the Blues. His unremarkable tenure at the club saw him move back to the German club in 2022 on a £23.5 million deal.

He scored 16 goals last term in all competitions. However, in 13 games so far this season, he has only been able to ripple the net twice. His unhappiness at the club could see him come back to the Premier League another time.
