Copa America 2024: Vinicius shines as Brazil register first win, eliminate Paraguay

With their first Copa America win secured, Brazil now face a tougher test against Colombia in their final group stage match on July 2nd.

Brazil grabbed their maiden Copa America 2024 win in style, dismantling Paraguay 4-1 in a dominant performance. This victory of Selecao eliminated Paraguay from the ongoing tournament.

Vinicius Jr takes center stage

Following a disappointing opening draw against Costa Rica, Brazil coach Dorival Junior opted for a change in attack, bringing in Savio for Raphinha.

The switch paid off immediately, as Brazil started strong and were awarded a penalty early on. Unfortunately, Lucas Paqueta failed to convert from the spot.

The pressure eventually yielded a breakthrough when Vinicius Jr put Brazil on the scoreboard with a simple tap-in. Savio soon doubled the lead, putting Brazil firmly in control. Vinicius Jr continued his impressive form, adding his second goal just before halftime after capitalizing on a fortuitous rebound.

Paraguay fight back, but Brazil seal deal

Paraguay started the second half with renewed purpose, pulling a goal back through a well-struck long-range effort by Omar Alderete. However, their hopes were short-lived. Brazil were awarded another penalty after a handball in the Paraguay box, and this time, Paqueta made no mistake, redeeming himself for his earlier miss.

The frustration for Paraguay boiled over when Andres Cubas received a red card for retaliation after a challenge on Douglas Luiz. Playing with a man advantage, Brazil comfortably controlled the remainder of the match.
