Chennaiyin FC return likely, Owen Coyle set for second stint with ISL outfit

Chennaiyin FC reportedly re-signed Owen Coyle after the departure of the Scottish international in 2020. The 56-year-old coach almost guided the team to their third Indian Super League title in the past.

After the Scotland international departed the club in 2020, Chennaiyin FC supposedly managed to re-sign Owen Coyle ahead of ISL 2023-24. The 56-year-old, a familiar sight at Marina Arena, came within inches of leading the Blues to their third Indian Super League title three years ago. However, they were defeated by Mohun Bagan Super Giants (formerly known as ATK Mohun Bagan) in a final played in secret.

Owen Coyle and the Marina Machans failed to come to an understanding that resulted in the Scottish player joining Jamshedpur FC. The former Bolton Wanderers manager’s second season with the Red Miners was joyful since Jamshedpur won the League winners shield in 2022, despite the fact that he was unable to offer playoff action in his first season with the Red Miners.

Owen Coyle joined Queen’s Park FC from Jamshedpur FC a year ago after leaving for family-related reasons. That decision did not work out as he had hoped because they narrowly missed earning a playoff place. He left the club as a result of this.

Contrarily, Chennaiyin FC has had severe hardship over the previous several years, leading to the dismissal of three coaches, including Csaba Laszlo, Bozidar Bandovic, and Thomas Brdaric. During his second tenure at the club, the head coach of Chennaiyin FC has a difficult challenge ahead of him.

Brdaric led CFC for a total of 28 games, winning 10, drawing 8, and losing 10. The squad scored 53 goals during this time span while also giving up 52. The former German international started working for the club when the squad made it to the quarterfinals of the Durand Cup.

He also oversaw the Marina Machans team during the Indian Super League, when they concluded the league stage in eighth place with 27 points. The previous time Brdaric’s team competed, they were unable to get past the group stage of the Super Cup.

The star-studded performers from Owen Coyle’s team in 2020, including Nerijus Valskis, Edwin Sydney, Rafael Crivellaro, Vishal Kaith, and Lallianzuala Chhangte, have all departed the club recently.

Sabir Pasha, his former assistant coach who worked for the team from 2016 to 2022, also acknowledged his resignation from the organisation last year. Raman Vijayan, who has a tonne of expertise, took over for Sabir and filled in for Thomas Brdaric during the previous campaign.
