In Friday’s west London derby at Stamford Bridge, Fulham held Chelsea to a scoreless draw as Chelsea struggled offensively. Enzo Fernandez, a British record acquisition from Benfica, started for Chelsea just 72 hours after arriving, joining Benoit Badiashile and Mykhailo Mudryk on the field. Chelsea started with three of their eight January arrivals.

The Premier League’s bottom scorers, however, once again lacked a decisive edge in attack, dropping them to ninth place in the standings despite having played at least one more game than the side directly behind them. Meanwhile, Fulham’s remarkable campaign continues as they climb up to sixth place, two points ahead of their regional rivals.

Along with the new additions, Reece James made a welcome comeback from injury at right-back and winger Hakim Ziyech received a surprising spot just days after his last-minute deadline-day transfer to Paris Saint-Germain fell through.

Chelsea still struggled to consistently pose an offensive threat, having scored just 22 goals in their first 20 games. However, Fernandez was at the centre of the best offensive plays made by the home team in the first half.

Mason Mount was given space down the left by the World Cup winner’s lofted pass in the 32nd minute, and only a pivotal touch from Tim Ream likely kept Kai Havertz from converting Mount’s low cross. A few minutes later, another Fernandez pass allowed Ziyech to enter the box from the right while jogging, but the Moroccan international’s shot was wildly off target.

Fulham, who won the rematch 2-1 only three weeks prior, started to gain control of the game at the other end. And Andreas Pereira pushed Kepa Arrizabalaga to make the lone significant save of the opening period with a low shot that required full-length diving.

Furthermore, in the second half, Fulham gave everything they had. At the beginning of the half, Willian forced Kepa into a save against his old team, and shortly after, he gave Perreira another opportunity.

Chelsea had a great chance to win all three points with 11 minutes to go. Ream came back to make a sliding clearance off the line to save a definite goal and a share of the points minutes after another January addition, David Datro Fofana, rounded stranded Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno on the edge of the box.
