Brighton have informed the Blues that they would not pay the Seagulls’ asking price of more than £80 million for the Ecuadorian international. In recent years, Roberto De Zerbi’s team has been recognised for refusing to sell on the cheap.
Chelsea had a £55 million ($70 million) deal for Brighton midfielder Caicedo rejected in January, then an upgraded £60 million ($76 million) approach was rejected in June. The Blues will not pay more than £80 million for the 21-year-old this summer, after signing Villarreal forward Nicolas Jackson on an eight-year contract for £30 million ($38 million).
If the Blues are unwilling to pay close to £100 million ($127 million) for the Ecuadorian international, Manchester United may be able to sign the former Independiente del Valle star. After their £55 million deal for Chelsea’s Mason Mount was rejected, the Red Devils may switch their focus to Caicedo, whose contract at the Amex expires in 2027.

Brighton signed Caicedo from Independiente for a pittance of £4.5 million in February 2021, just weeks after United had the opportunity to buy the then-19-year-old for a comparable fee. If the former Beerschot loanee, who was a January transfer target for Arsenal, is sold this summer, the Seagulls will earn handsomely.
Caicedo had the most successful tackles (58), interceptions (65), and blocks (43) of any Brighton player last season, as well as 43 opportunities and the second-most progressive passes (219). He also had the most tackles in the Premier League, trailing only Fulham’s Joao Palhinha.
Caicedo is presently on vacation after representing Ecuador in friendlies against Bolivia and Costa Rica. He is expected to report for preseason in July.
