There were 21 penalties successfully taken with Fabinho netting a brilliant Panenka. But it was Kepa who missed, skying the ball over the bar, to hand Liverpool the trophy. We had way too many disallowed goals which saw frustration rise on the face of the managers and fans but the heroics of Edouard Mendy and Kelleher kept the score goalless. The west London outfit were finding a huge amount of space behind Liverpool’s full backs but it didn’t translate to another big chance inside the opening 20 minutes. Liverpool were though, were slowly getting back into the game and had a flurry of corners on the half hour mark that worried the Chelsea defence.

And they really should have scored on 31 minutes but a remarkable double save from Edouard Mendy kept the game goalless. This topsy-turvy game then took another turn as Chelsea blew their biggest chance of the half when Mason Mount struck wide when it looked easier to score.

After the break it was Mount again who missed a golden opportunity as he waltzed in put could only hit the post with his effort. The Reds then had their own superb chance as Salah raced in, chipped Mendy but then saw his effort cleared off the line by Thiago Silva.

But from the preceding corner Joel Matip got on the end of Keïta’s header and bundled in the opener but it was ruled out by the referee for offside. Moments later there was another goal disallowed for offside as Havertz’s header was ruled out.

Chelsea looked like the team most likely to score in the first half of extra time as Werner and then Kanté fired over from the edge of the area. A third goal was disallowed with eight minutes gone as Romelu Lukaku was played in but just strayed into an offside position.

Amazingly, a fourth goal was disallowed for offside with Havertz the man again beyond the play. It stayed goalless as this amazing game went to penalties.
