Captain Sunil Chhetri insists on Indian Football Team’s participation in Asian Games

Sunil Chhetri, captain of the Indian football team, has emphasised the significance of competing in the Asian Games 2022.

Indian Football Team skipper Sunil Chhetri has urged on the importance of playing in the Asian Games 2022. The Indian Football Team are set to miss out on the Asian Games after not befitting the government-set guidelines.

“It’s important to play in the Asian Games. The more tournaments we play, the better we get.” Sunil Chhetri urged on NDTV when asked about it.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is confident of sending its best team to the Asian Games, led by captain Sunil Chhetri. Their participation in the coveted competition, however, is subjected to earning clearance from the sports ministry. The news came after AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey’s discussions allegedly convinced the Union Ministry of a favourable signal.

According to a source close to the situation, Sunil Chhetri, Sandesh Jihingan, and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu are all ready to join the team. However, the Government’s approval is still pending.

Large-scale internet protests against India’s exclusion from the event erupted, with fans urging a reconsideration of the decision. The head coach, Igor Stimac, also begged with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to enable India to participate.

The Indian football team, captained by Sunil Chhetri, is likely to compete in the Asian Games in 2022, as the AIFF releases a list of 50 probable U23 players and Kalyan Chaubey meets with ministry officials.

Nonetheless, AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, a BJP member in power, has seized command of the issue. There has been no formal confirmation of Chaubey’s supposed intense meeting with the Union Ministry, which is said to have granted permission.

It is undoubtedly disheartening that the Indian national team’s participation may be prohibited, especially given the squad’s recent successes. Such a missed opportunity would definitely be frustrating for Indian football.
