Finally, it looks like Indian football is stepping into right direction with the implementation of goal-line technology in the Calcutta Football League (CFL). This marks a historic moment for the country, as the CFL becomes the first league to adopt advanced refereeing technology.
Advanced Referring Technology (ART)
The new technology, known as Advanced Referring Technology (ART), is the result of a collaborative effort between the Indian Football Association (IFA) and Jadavpur University. After extensive research, the Jadavpur University team has created a system capable of precisely determining whether a ball has crossed the goal line.
The IFA Secretary, Anirban Dutta, has announced that ART will be used experimentally in the Premier Division Super Six of the Kolkata Football League. If successful, this technology could be extended to other aspects of the game, such as offsides and penalties.
“We signed an MOU with JU four months ago. This tech is also viable because the cost is quite low, unlike VAR. Just four cameras and a laptop will suffice for it. Overall, it should not exceed more than Rs 2 lakh rupees. This is the first work related to football done by Jadavpur University. JU’s Institute Innovation Council is the brainchild behind this project. We hope to use it in phase two, where offsides and penalty decisions come into play,” said IFA Secretary Anirban Dutta.
The introduction of ART aims to address one of the most contentious issues in football: whether a goal has been scored. By providing referees with precise and reliable information, this technology aims to reduce human error and ensure fair outcomes in matches
