In the front, Roberto De Zerbi had to decide between Danny Welbeck and Evan Ferguson. In actuality, he chose both, which might necessitate a little system update.
Brighton has made a total of four changes after the 2-2 draw last weekend at Leicester.

Robert Sanchez, Jan Paul van Hecke, Adam Lallana, and Moises Caicedo, who is absent with an official leave of absence, are replaced by Jason Steele, Tariq Lamptey, Adam Webster, and Ferguson. One change was made by Jurgen Klopp from the scoreless 0-0 tie with Chelsea eight days prior. At right-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold takes James Milner’s place.

Following their 3-0 loss at Brighton two weeks prior, Liverpool scored first with Harvey Elliott on the 30th minute of a close game, and the hosts answered through Lewis Dunk ten minutes later. When Mitoma scored late to win a surprising victory, the match appeared to be headed for a repeat.

The two teams got things going quickly. Mohamed Salah’s shot from Liverpool’s opening assault was cleared off the line after four minutes, and Evan Ferguson’s own effort was hooked from the goal line. In the early going, Brighton and Klopp’s team were evenly matched in terms of chances and possession, but Elliott gave Liverpool the lead after 30 minutes.

On the right flank, Salah had space to run into. He found Elliott hiding behind Brighton’s regaining defensive line, and the 19-year-old striker fired into the far corner with goalkeeper Jason Steele receiving just a hint of a touch.

However, Roberto De Zerbi’s team equalised ten minutes later when Dunk scored his first goal of the campaign under fortunate circumstances. Alexander Arnold only headed out Alexis Mac Allister’s cross from a corner routine into the path of the advancing Tariq Lamptey, whose low shot from 25 yards took a significant deflection off Dunk and flew beyond.

19 minutes from time, the home team came dangerously close to grabbing the lead when Solly March’s shot was superbly saved by Alisson and rebounded off the Brighton forward and out for a goal kick.

Two minutes into stoppage time, Mitoma struck to knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup, dealing Liverpool a cruel late blow. When Pervis Estupinan passed the ball to Mitoma, the Japanese attacker weaved his way into the box to create space before beating Alisson with a final-second shot.
