But just two minutes later, Jordi Alba earned himself a potential Puskas nomination after his volley from the top of the box smashed into the far top corner and it kick-started Barcelona’s comeback. As Atleti’s attack mellowed, the hosts were surging with energy after the equaliser.

Adama Traoré, who was a threat all night, eventually teed up Gavi for 2-0 and Ronald Araújo managed to poke home a loose ball in the box for 3-1 just before half-time. Coming out after the break the momentum continued in favour of Xavi’s men as some trickery in the box led to Dani Alves smashing the ball past Jan Oblak for a fourth.

But not down and out just yet, Atleti’s substitutions brought some energy off the bench and they eventually made things a two-goal game when Suárez scored against his former club.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang then came on for his debut to add some firepower but things would then take another twist. Barcelona went down to 10 after Alves stamped on Carrasco’s calf seeing VAR hand him a straight red.

With the man advantage, the visitors continued to try and close the gap yet despite the best efforts of Ángel Correa and Daniel Wass, they couldn’t turn things around. The result means Barcelona move into fourth while Atleti are fifth.
