Since the beginning of the year, Barcelona has been interested in Vitor Roque and are now close to signing him after reaching an agreement in principle with Athletico Paranaense. This week, Athletico Paranaense CEO Alexandre Mattos travelled to Barcelona to finalise a deal for Roque, which appears to have been reached.
Roque, who joined Athletico from first senior club Cruzeiro last year, has been playing first-team football in his own country since 2021 despite having just turned 18 earlier this year.

In 25 appearances across all competitions for his current squad so far in 2023, Roque has already scored 10 goals. His performance, which was also rewarded with a debut senior international appearance for Brazil in March, has inevitably attracted a lot of interest from Europe.
The 18-year-old striker has apparently been on Barca’s radar for some time. For the Brazilian Serie A team, he has an excellent 15 goal contributions in 25 outings across all competitions. On Tuesday, it was made public that the Catalan behemoths and Paranaense had come to terms on a €40 million (£34 million/$43 million) move for Roque.

Roque will agree to a five-year contract with Barcelona that includes a €1 billion release clause. Whether he will join now or in January is not yet known; it will depend on whether he can register now or not. There are still many details to be worked out before the deal is finalised, but the Paranaense camp’s comments will give Barca a tremendous boost as they go closer to acquiring one of the most exciting forward prospects in the league.
