Lionel Messi is the reigning winner of the Ballon d’Or award and has won it a record 7 times. This has been the first time since he has not been nominated since 2005. On the flip side, Cristiano Ronaldo has been nominated for 18 years straight since 2004. The French organizers went on to explain that Lionel Messi has not been nominated based on the criteria that are required in a football season.
Justifying their nomination process, the French organizers explained that Messi missed out on the 30-man nomination due to his subpar performance in the recent football season and not overall in the calendar year.

The French publication’s initial justification is the modification of the Ballon d’Or criteria, pointing out that it is now based on the football season and not the calendar year and that Messi’s performances were below par. After making a sensational transfer to PSG from Barcelona last summer, Messi had a disaster of a first season.
