Ballon d’Or 2022: The prestigious ceremony to be held on October 17

France Football have announced that their yearly award for the best player in world football, the Ballon d’Or, will undergo several reforms ahead of the 2022 edition after criticism over Lionel Messi being awarded his 7th Ballon d’Or title earlier this season. The 2022 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place on 17th October 2022.

Karim Benzema, Robert Lewandowski and Sadio are said to be the frontrunners in the race to be named as the best footballer in the world. The nominees will be revealed on 12th August 2022.

Ballon d’Or: What are the new changes in the Ballon d’Or?

  1. Voting will now be based on performance during a season rather than a calendar year. The 2022 award will be based on the 2021/22 campaign, with the Women’s Euros in July 2022 the final matches to be considered. The 2022 World Cup will contribute to the 2023 award.
  2. The shortlisting process was previously drawn up by journalists working for France Football and L’Équipe. In the future, Ballon d’Or ambassador Didier Drogba will also help finalise the shortlists alongside the “most insightful voter” from the previous edition.
  3. For the 2022 award, Vietnamese journalist Truong Anh Ngoc (The Thao & Van Hoa) will contribute to the shortlist for the Men’s award while Czech judge Karolina Hlavackova (Ruik) will help finalise the Women’s shortlist.

  4. Voting for the Ballon d’Or will now be restricted to the top 100 countries according to FIFA’s rankings for the Men’s award and the top 50 for the Women’s award. This aims to create an “elite” panel, avoiding votes cast based on player reputation; all votes remain equal.
  5. France Football have also provided clarity on the award criteria: “The Ballon d’Or is an individual award. Criterion No.1 will focus primarily on individual performance and the decisive and impressive character of the contenders.”
  6. “Criterion No.2 will focus on collective performance and the record accumulated during the season.” “Criterion No.3 will concern the class of the player and his sense of fair play. Because setting an example also counts.”
  7. Finally, Criterion No.4 has been removed. A player’s career should no longer be considered when voting – “a way of considering the race for the Ballon d’Or as an open competition, and not as a preserve.”
  8. The 2022 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place in October 2022.
