In a frightening incident, a man wielding an axe was recently shot by police on Sunday (June 16) in Hamburg, Germany. The development occurred just hours before the city was set to host the highly anticipated Poland vs Netherlands UEFA Euro 2024 match.

The incident unfolded in the Reeperbahn, Hamburg’s bustling entertainment district, which was teeming with Dutch fans who had come to cheer on their national team. According to police reports, the man emerged from a restaurant brandishing a double-bladed ax and an incendiary device, threatening officers stationed nearby. He reportedly even had a dangerous ‘Molotov cocktail’ on him as well.

“According to initial findings, a person threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device. The police then used their firearms,” a police spokesman said.
Despite being badly wounded by gunfire (at least one bullet), the 23-year-old victim found the strength to crawl to a nearby street before passing out. A German army doctor was present there and provided first aid with paramedics. The victim was then rushed to the hospital for surgery.
Authorities initially attempted to subdue the man using pepper spray and a warning shot. However, a local journalist who witnessed the events reported that the situation escalated, forcing the police to discharge their firearms. The man sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment. Thankfully, no bystanders or officers were reported hurt in the incident.
