Following a 2-2 draw on Sunday at the Volkswagen Stadium against the defending champions of the Fraun-Bundelisga, VfL Wolfsburg, Arsenal were on their way back to north London. On the runway at Germany’s Braunschweig Wolfsburg Airport, shocking photographs from the incident show flames erupting from the engine of the Boeing 737, which was transporting the team.

Just before takeoff, a bird crashed into the engine, making a loud noise, which is when the tragedy happened. The Boeing 737’s left engine instantly began to spew flames, and the pilots on board moved swiftly to remove the passengers, who included Arsenal’s first team players, to safety.

After spending the night at a nearby hotel, the Arsenal players and personnel were safely transported to London on a replacement aircraft on Monday.Volkswagen Group, an automotive company with its headquarters in Wolfsburg, owns a combined interest in the airport.

Arsenal have released a statement confirming they returned home safely this morning.

The statement read: ‘Our aircraft developed a technical issue prior to take-off in Germany on Sunday evening.  We remained in Wolfsburg overnight on Sunday before flying back to England on Monday afternoon. We would like to thank the staff onboard the aircraft and on the ground at the airport for their assistance.’

After making it back from Germany and pulling out a 2-2 draw in the first leg on Sunday, Arsenal can now look ahead to trying to clinch a spot in this year’s Champions League final.They may advance to the Women’s Champions League Final where they would play either Barcelona or Chelsea, rivals from Spain or London.
