Title-chasing With a 4-0 hammering of relegation-threatened Everton on Wednesday at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal increased their advantage over the competition’s leaders to five points thanks to a brace from Gabriel Martinelli. Arsenal now has 60 points from 25 games, whereas City only has 55 following their home loss to City.

The hosts were initially upset by Everton’s struggles, but goals from Bukayo Saka and Martinelli just before halftime gave them the lead and allowed them to fully utilise the game they still had over Manchester City. In the 71st minute, captain Martin Odegaard made it 3-0 with a close-range shot, and Martinelli added his second of the game to complete the onslaught.

Everton had genuinely appeared capable of gaining something from the game, but they have now only experienced one victory in their last 27 league trips to Arsenal. In February, in Sean Dyche’s first game in command, Everton upset Arsenal, and during the first 40 minutes of the game, they completely neutralised them.

But, after they fell behind, their 14th league loss of the year almost seemed inevitable. They are now third from the bottom with 21 points despite having played one more game than the clubs above them. But with halftime approaching, they gave in.

Dangerman Saka had been rather quiet, but when the opportunity presented itself, he erupted. He received a ball from Odegaard on the right edge of the penalty box, and with far too much time to turn, he hammered an angled shot into the roof of the net.

Idrissa Gueye of Everton then gave Arsenal a second just before halftime. The Senegal midfielder was caught off guard when Saka stole the ball from him and sent it to Martinelli, who then slipped a shot past Jordan Pickford. A VAR ruling overturned an offside call that the visitors believed had saved them, and Arsenal entered the field at halftime amid chants of “we are top of the league” from the home crowd.

With only 17 league goals scored throughout the entire season, it appeared to be a difficult task for Everton to recover anything, and they gave very little after the break. Leandro Trossard’s cutback allowed Odegaard to score his team’s third goal, and Martinelli’s late goal after Eddie Nketiah’s assist established the gap between the teams.
