Arsenal vs Barcelona Live: Club Friendlies LIVE – ARS vs BAR LIVE – Arsenal face old foe Barcelona in their 5th pre-season friendly match. Arsenal are determined to give serious competition in all competitions this upcoming season. However, they are having a shaky pre-season so far. In their last 4 friendlies, they have won 1, lost 1, and drawn 2 matches. On the other hand, Barcelona had their pre-season plans stalled due to players and crew members falling victim to viral gastroenteritis. Hence, this will be their first pre-season friendly after over a month’s break.

Arsenal started their pre-season campaign with a 3-match unbeaten streak. However, they still had only a few positive notes to take away from the matches as 2 out of those 3 matches actually ended in draws. They ended both of their first two friendlies in 1-1 draws against Watford and Nurnberg. In their third friendly against the MLS All-Star team, the  Gunners won the match by a 5-0 margin. They made a record as they won by the biggest margin against the MLS All-Star team in its history.

However, it does not bode well for the Gunners that they lost 2-0 against their domestic rivals Man United with the Premier League soon to start. In their latest friendly match, there was also an exhibition penalty shootout against the Red Devils which the Gunners also lost by a 5-3 margin. Now, they face Barcelona, who they have not won against in any competitions since February, 2011. Following this match, the Gunners will face Monaco in the Emirates Cup before facing Manchester City in the Community Shield.

Barcelona started improving their financial situation and performance from last season. They managed to win the Spanish Supercup and La Liga amidst an average season. They were knocked out of the Champions League from the group stages. As they qualified for the Europa League, they got knocked out from the knockout round play-offs. Hence, they will be looking to improve further in this upcoming season. They started their pre-season campaign within days of the end of last season. They began with a 2-0 win against Vissel Kobe on June 6.

After a summer vacation of over 1.5 months, Barcelona came back for their second friendly against Juventus on July 22nd. However, reportedly, around 15 first-team unit members fell sick to viral gastroenteritis, and the match was cancelled. The illness has derailed Xavi’s pre-season plans. Xavi will now utilise the available players to him against the Gunners in their now second pre-season friendly. Following this match, Blaugranas will face Real Madrid, and AC Milan before taking on Tottenham Hotspur in the Joan Gamper Trophy match.

Arsenal Team News

  • Arsenal have two major injury concerns ahead of their clash with Barcelona. Reiss Nelson is yet to join the team due to a toe injury. As he is still recovering, Oleksandr Zinchenko remains with him in the journey to recovery from his own calf issue. Arteta is in a worrying state as with 4 pre-season friendly matches down, Zinchenko is yet to show any signs of being able to join the team.
  • On the other hand, they have received boosts as Emile Smith Rowe, Thomas Partey, and Leandro Trossard returned during their last match against Man United. Trossard received a knock to his knee during their win against MLS All-Star, but shook off any injury scare and played over 20 minutes. All three players will be expected to get involved against Barcelona.
  • Coach Arteta will have most of his squad available to utilise on Wednesday and he could use a majority of his squad by rotating them in the match. All of Kieran Tierney, Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira, and Ben White will be pushing to get a start on Wednesday after playing as a substitute last time around.

Barcelona Team News

  • With Barcelona still in doubt regarding a major part of their squad, it’ll take time to check who can be available for the match against the Gunners. Reportedly, Eric Garcia, Alejandro Balde, Jules Kounde, and their recent signing Oriol Romeu who returned to the club after 12 years have all fallen victim to the viral gastroenteritis, so Xavi will have a limited option.
  • Coach Xavi could choose to keep still unwell at the doctor’s for them to fully recover as soon as possible. The coach might be forced to give the recent signings Ilkay Gundogan a start in the midfield and Inigo Martinez a start in the defense. Whether they start or come on as substitutes, if the coach decides to give them some playing time, it will be their non-competitive debut for Barcelona.
