If it comes down to it, Ange Postecoglou won’t stand in the way of Lionel Messi’s claim that Cristian Romero at Tottenham is the best player in the world.
Romero, who was part of the Argentina team that won the World Cup alongside Messi last December, was praised by the seven times Ballon d’Or winner following Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Ecuador last week.
The Spurs centre-half helped his nation to Copa America glory in 2021, before then playing an important part in their triumphant World Cup campaign at Qatar 2022.
Following the match Messi told reporters: “For me, he is the best defender in the world right now. Amazing performance tonight, man of the match.”

This isn’t the first time the Argentine has praised the Tottenham defender after a string of impressive performances for both club and national sides.
The praise by Messi has sat well with the Tottenham boss. He has seen the Argentine grow into a dressing-room leader during his short time in north London.
“I wouldn’t argue with Messi,” Postecoglou exclusively told talkSPORT. “I’ll tell you what, I wouldn’t like to play against him [Romero].
“Most of the boys don’t like to train against him. He’s a real competitor and I love that about him. Whether it’s training or a game, what you see is what you get with Romero,” said Postecoglou.
Tottenham would be hoping Romero and Son Heung-min take up leadership roles in the absence of Harry Kane. The England International left for Germany’s Bayern Munich after spending 14 years at the club.
The club finished in the eighth position in the Premier League last season. The club will be without European football this time around. Postecoglou will bank on Romero in their quest for a top-4 finish.
