David de Gea, Manchester United’s fired goalie, is being begged to return on a temporary basis as part of an embarrassing U-turn strategy. The team is concerned that when De Gea’s successor, Cameroon No. 1 Andre Onana, travels to the Africa Cup of Nations in January, they won’t have enough goalkeepers. Man United were taken by surprise when Onana reversed course on his international retirement.

David De Gea heading back to Old Trafford?
Up to eight United games could be missed by the £43.8 million summer signing since the Afcon runs from January 13 to February 11. After letting David De Gea go in the summer, the team is now prepared to turn to him.
The 32-year-old Spaniard was a member of Old Trafford for 12 years before his contract expired. Since then, he hasn’t played for any other teams. David De Gea received a reduced contract offer from United, which included a weekly salary reduction from £375,000 to £200,000.
However, in the end, not even that offer was on the table. Remarkably, United also requested that he hold off on accepting a transfer for Onana until they had finished the process. It was viewed as unfair treatment of their all-time longest-serving goalie, who had just won the Premier League’s Golden Glove.
For £4.3 million, United acquired Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce, but Tom Heaton will be the only other stopper in the team for the Afcon competition. Man United captain, Bruno Fernandes, who recently met with David De Gea, previously expressed his regret that the Spaniard did not get a proper send-off.
That send-off could be done now if David De Gea accepts a short term deal. Many felt that the Red Devils should have still held onto the Spainard even though they signed Onana. The ex-Inter Milan keeper has not adapted to life easily in Manchester but was instrumental in keeping their UCL hopes alive after a last minute penalty save.
Will the Spaniard join the Red Devils?
David De Gea is waiting to see if a good offer comes in, despite being linked to a move to Saudi Arabia. He also rejected earlier bids during the summer transfer window. Remarkably, the Sun also state that United requested De Gea hold off on signing a new contract until a transfer for Onana was finalized.

The Spainard desire to return to Old Trafford is unknown. Keeping in mind that if he will be starting as number two until Onana returns from the AFCON. In United’s 13 competitive games, Onana has started every one of them. During that time, he has let up 20 goals and only managed four clean sheets.
David De Gea’s remarkable 17 shutouts from 38 games during the previous season earned him the Premier League Golden Glove award. It will be interesting to see what the Spanish goalie does now.
