All England Finals Highlights – Axelsen defeats Lakshya Sen 21-10, 21-15: World No.1 Viktor Axelsen put up a dominating show against Lakshya Sen as he defeated the Indian 21-10, 21-15 to win the All England Open title on Sunday. The entire match was completely one-sided as the 20-year old Lakshya couldn’t challenge the World No.1. With the win, Axelsen has won his second All-England title.

Lakshya Sen was fighting to become only the third Indian to win the title at the All England Open but he looked completely out of sorts against the Axelsen. Right from the start, Axelsen dominated the game. Immediately after the start, Axelsen raced to a 6-0 lead. Before the break, Lakshya could manage just two points as the Danish entered the break with a 9 point lead. Lakshya tried hard to make a comeback but he committed too many errors that helped Axelsen win the first set easily.

In the second set too, Axelsen started on the front foot. But Lakshya made a quick comeback to level the scores 4-4. But Lakshya Sen continued to commit errors that took the game away from him and entered the break trailing 6-11. Lakshya failed to match up the intensity of Axelsen and despite playing out good rallies, the Indian failed to close out the games. Axelsen soon had eight match points in his hand. Towards the end, Lakshya got three consecutive points but it was too late as his opponent avanged his German Open semi-final defeat against Lakshya Sen by winning the match and the championship.

While Lakshya Sen ended India’s seven year wait to reach the finals of the All-England Open after Saina finished as runner-up in 2015, India’s wait of 21 years for an All England title continues yet again. Prakash Padukone, at whose academy Lakshya learned the nuances of the game and still trains, won it in 1980. While Pullela Gopichand was the last All England winner from India in 2001.

“I’m very happy with my performance. Finals did not go my way but I will learn” Lakshya said after losing the finals.

6-11 Axelsen enters the break with a five-point lead. 

5-10 Axelsen attacks Lakshya with three successive smashes to which the Indian succumbs.

4-7 Lakshya commits another error by hitting wide.

3-4 Axelsen misjudges a shot from Lakshya that lands inside the backline that reduces his lead to 1-point.
