The former assistant coach of the Indian Under-17 women’s football team, Alex Ambrose, was fired for sexual misbehaviour in July. He has an arrest warrant issued by a Delhi court. According to the court website, the warrant was issued on Friday in accordance with Section 70 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. According to Section 16 of the document, the court had summoned the defendant and issued a notice for bail violation (Sec 446).

Within hours after hearing that a Delhi court had issued the warrant, they urged forceful action against Ambrose in their tweets today. They stated that there was no place for harassment of any type in football. According to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, Ambrose is accused of sexual misconduct (POCSO). The matter itself dates back to last July when he was sent back from a training tour in Norway;. The All India Football Federation was supposed to conduct an investigation. However there have been no subsequent updates from the group.

Indian Mens’s National Team and Bengaluru FC goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu earlier poured his heart out when the incident came to light. “I’ve always tried to do my bit to advocate the push for women’s football in the country. But the alleged incident/s from the past week is are a reminder that I, and all of us, need to do more. Sexual misdemeanours should have no place in society, let alone football.” he wrote.

He was joined by teammate Suresh Wangjam who condemned the act as well. He took to twitter to write: “The incident of sexual misconduct surrounding the Girls U17 team is very disturbing.I hope that a thorough investigation is carried out and the guilty are punished harshly. Women’s football has been on the rise, and we have to do everything to encourage it.”
