Ajax vs Feyenoord suspended after fans launch fireworks onto pitch

The game between Ajax and Feyenoord was called off after spectators fired fireworks onto the pitch, covering it with smoke and making visibility impossible.

Ajax vs Feyenoord: The afternoon match between Ajax and Feyenoord on Sunday was SUSPENDED. It happened when home supporters launched fireworks onto the pitch following Celtic’s Champions League opponents’ 3-0 halftime lead.

At one point, the game was stopped due to the threat to the player’s safety posed by the missiles that were raining down from the stands. After a brief break, it was agreed to resume play, but another break was needed because flares kept falling onto the playing field.

Ajax have had a terrible start to the season, with only one win in their first four games, and they are currently 0-3 coming into the match against Feyenoord. The latter had won three and drawn two of their first five games, so it was always going to be a difficult task.

Maurice Steijn’s team was well aware that losing would drop them to the bottom half of the league. Thus, they are already ten points behind league leaders PSV Eindhoven.

Insidesport

Nobody in the Johan Cruyff Arena expected the visitors to take a 3-0 lead at halftime. Santiago Gimenez started the scoring on nine minutes and scored again nine minutes later. He scored the third goal, with Gimenez assisting, prompting Ajax fans to protest their team’s poor league placing.

Ajax are likely to face disciplinary action from the Dutch football authority for failing to manage the attitude of persons in the stands. The KNVB will impose punishments after determining how severe they should be.
