AFC Asian Cup final: First time finalists Jordan aim to upset reigning champions Qatar

It will be a David vs Goliath battle in the final as Qatar seek to become only the second team to lift back-to-back AFC Asian Cups and Jordan aim for a dream run of their own.

Jordan, playing in their first AFC Asian Cup final, take on the hosts Qatar on Saturday at the Lusail Arena in a high profile final. Qatar, on the other hand, will attempt to become just the second team to win the tournament twice in a row this century. In their semifinal fixtures, Jordan overcame South Korea 2-0, and Qatar prevailed 3-2 over Iran.

Qatar vs Jordan Preview

For Qatar, the hosts, this is not a unique occasion. They are the reigning champions, having won the championship with ease in 2019 thanks to 19 goals in seven games, including three against Japan in the final. Although their attack has not been as effective as it once was, they are still the clear favorites going into this match because they have scored 11 goals in six games and allowed just four.

The real story of the tournament, though, has to be their opponents, who advanced to their first final ever as one of the top third-placed teams in Asia despite only being the 13th-best team in Asia. Jordan’s journey to the summit match has been extraordinary, as they defeated South Korea and Iraq in the elimination rounds. Their defensive solidity—they have allowed just five goals in their first six games—and their two-goal average offensive line have been the cornerstones of their success thus far.
