The circumstance is unusual. Currently, no financial arrangement has been achieved for France since everyone has maintained their stances. Le Monde was informed that the channels’ requests range between €2 million and €4 million, while FIFA is still aiming for between €8 million and €10 million.

FIFA claims that all proceeds from the sale of the broadcasting rights will be used to advance women’s football. The warning made by the Italian-Swiss leader that the Big Five (the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, and France) would not be able to broadcast the match has heightened the pressure.

However, an agreement is still expected before the start of July at the latest. After then, the channels will have to make their own arrangements because it will be too late.

Even though a deal has already been signed in 155 nations, FIFA President Gianni Infantino called the offers “very disappointing and simply not acceptable” on Instagram in the early days of May. He also called it “a slap in the face of all the great FIFA Women’s World Cup players and indeed of all women worldwide.”

Potential broadcasters bemoan the “overvaluation” of the rights for a 2023 event that would be held in France and will have far worse conditions than the last one in 2019. The competition takes place towards the end of the calendar year, when advertising is less active.

Additionally, because games are played at 10 am or noon, Paris time, the time difference (eight hours with Australia and 10 hours with New Zealand) makes it difficult for European stations to broadcast them. Advertising will be significantly less profitable with lower ratings.
