5 transfer targets for Eddie Howe as he takes up Newcastle United manager job after Saudi takeover: Newcastle United have taken the first step to resurrect their current campaign. They have appointed the former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe as their new manager. The 43-year-old will take over the reins from Steve Bruce. Newcastle United currently are in shambles, they have failed to win a single game in their current Premier League campaign.

A lot has changed in the last year at Newcastle United. New owners, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund have joined a consortium and will be looking to help Howe with reinforcements. The Magpies will be desperate to bring in some players in the January transfer window as they look to escape relegation from England’s top flight.

We at Insidesport analyse the top five players that the Magpies can target:

Donny Van de Beek

The Dutch midfielder was held in high regard as he was influential in guiding Erik ten Haag’s Ajax side to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League in the 2018-19 season. He played a pivotal role in the Dutch outfit’s 4-1 win over Real Madrid in the round of 16 clash. His exploits for Ajax attracted interest from a lot of clubs including Manchester United, Real Madrid and other top clubs. However, he joined United in 2020 and since then his career has gone downhill.

He has been overlooked by Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. On top of that, he does not fit in his system seamlessly as they have Bruno Fernandes in his position at Old Trafford. Therefore he is desperate for gametime and given his quality he will be a perfect signing for the Magpies. Van de Beek can bring that creativity and will on a rather dull side. His presence can change the fortunes of Newcastle United guiding them to safer shores in the Premier League.

Niklas Sule

Newcastle United have the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League and adding someone like Niklas Sule will bolster their backline immensely. The German international has been a consistent performer for Bayern Munich over the years. Standing at 6ft 5in, Sule will be a stalwart in defence for the Magpies and his acceleration and game reading ability will only help Newcastle get better defensively.

Sule has been in and out of the Bayern Munich side ever since the arrival of French defender Dayot Upamecano. However, if Sule looks for a change in his career he may look at the interesting project at Newcastle United and also play in the Premier League. Reports suggest that Newcastle officials have made contact with the German defender and will hope that they manage to convince him unlike Premier League outfit Chelsea.

Tyrone Mings

Defensive reinforcements will be a priority for Eddie Howe at St James Park. Therefore he can look at his former defender Tyrone Mings. Things are not great at Aston Villa aswell and Howe can use his influence with Mings to rope him away from Villa. Mings is a current England international and will only strengthen the backline for the Magpies.

Mings can be an ideal short term fix for Newcastle mainly because of his experience in the Premier League and also because of his familiarity with Eddie Howe back during their Bournemouth days. Howe understands the 28-year-old centre back and can make use of that chemistry at Newcastle United.

Luis Diaz

The Colombia winger attracted the limelight with his exceptional performances for his country at the Copa America. Luiz Diaz has been equally brilliant for FC Porto this season. His primary attribute is his will to go past defenders and score or create goals. He is only 24 and can be a long term signing for Newcastle United. He can build up a dangerous partnership with French winger Allan Saint-Maximin and together they can be marauding for opposition defenders.

Newcastle United were reportedly interesting in Diaz but the main obstacle is Porto’s demand for high transfer fees. The 24-year-old versatile forward has a £67.5 million release clause and it feels like the only way to snap the youngster to St James Park. So if Eddie Howe is convinced with the Colombian’s talent they should be ready to make this investment considering he can be a future superstar at the club.

Philippe Coutinho

The Brazilian midfielder’s move to FC Barcelona has not worked well for him honestly. Therefore if Coutinho wants to return to the Premier League, he can be tempted by the great project at Newcastle United. A crafty midfielder on his own right will look to resurrect his career and the Premier League can be the best place for him to do that in a new environment.

Coutinho has earned his name during his time at Liverpool and at that time he was considered as one of the best players in the league. The Brazilian will look to return to that kind of form and therefore a move to Premier League will be the first step of doing so. There is absolutely no question about his vision, chance creation and ability to wriggle past defenders at will, all he needs is a little bit of convincing. Considering the new takeover at the club, the management will be looking at big names and he can be one of their most marketable stars.
