1st WHITE CARD Football: Sporting v Benfica clash- During the match between Sporting Lisbon and Benfica women on Saturday ( 21st January), the white card was used for the first time in professional football since the introduction of cards in 1970. The ‘white card’ is unlikely the warning or a penalty card like yellow and red ones, it is more of appreciating the sportsmanship shown on the field. The Portuguese Football Federation started this new introduction in football alongside VAR and concussion substitutes in the Taca de Portugal Feminina (Portuguese female football). The white card is drawn to show the teams their fair play during a match in an effort to support the ethical value of the game. After the issue was dealt with, the referee can be seen brandishing the white card. Fans responded with big cheers at the appearance of the rare colour. During the Benfica women’s game against Sporting Lisbon, the referee showed the new card to both teams’ medical staff. A player went down injured due to an illness in the first half and the medical team from the two sides arrived immediately to help her.

The 15,032 supporters watched SL Benfica v Sporting CP, breaking the attendance record for a women’s match in Portugal. Benfica ran out with a margin of 5-0 in the quarter-finals at the Estadio da Luz stadium in Lisbon. The Filipa Patao players will now play the semifinal leg against the two times champion Sporting CP (women’s) at the Benfica campus stadium on Thursday (26th January).
